The 2010 NFL season Divisional race is heating up in both the AFC and NFC with five games remaining. While the top teams fight to position themselves with wins down the stretch, the fight to earn a ticket to the tournament is what it is all about, whether it’s as Divisional Champions or Wild Card.

Once you get in, anything can happen, and anyone can go to the show. I know. In 2003 I was the Director of College Scouting with the Carolina Panthers, and we hosted the Wild Card game, beating Bill Parcells and the Dallas Cowboys. We then moved on to St. Louis and defeated the Greatest Show on Turf in double overtime in the NFC Divisional Playoff game, then upset the Philadelphia Eagles in their new stadium to win the NFC Championship and the opportunity to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.

As Carolina did in 2003, each divisional leader (and those in the hunt) have several things in common; Directive from Ownership; Great Coaching; Top Quarterback; Playmakers/Difference makers Offense/Defense; Great Fan base. Let’s take a look at the top leaders as of today.

What all these players have in common, most of their teams are in the chase for the ring. It will be interesting down the stretch to track this data and see if the top performers are actually on teams that make it to the tournament.
