NICO JOHNSON
Inside/Outside Linebacker
University of Alabama Crimson Tide
#35
6:01.7-249
Andalusia, Alabama
Andalusia High School
OVERVIEW
Johnson was one of the highest-rated recruits in Alabama’s 2009 signing class, but in four seasons with the Crimson Tide, the five-star recruit received only 21 starting assignments. A versatile player like Johnson did not seem to mind, as he saw considerable action, appearing in a total of 52 games for the national champions.
Despite the slew of four- and five-star recruits that occupy most of Alabama’s roster, the players embraced the team-first work ethic. While Johnson could have been given much more starting opportunities at other major colleges, securing those championship rings is what it means to be a Crimson Tide player.
With his career now behind him, he joined offensive lineman Barrett Jones as one of two members on the current squad to have helped Alabama win the national title after the 2009, 2011 and 2012 seasons. He closed out his career recording 163 tackles, including 16.5 stops behind the line of scrimmage, seeing action at a variety of roles during his Tide career.
One of the elite linebackers in the 2009 recruiting class, Johnson follows in a long line of excellent linebacker prospects from the state of Alabama. He attended Andalusia High School, where he was a Parade, Super Prep, Prep Football Report and U.S. Army All-American selection, along with being a finalist for the first high school Butkus Award.
A consensus five-star recruit, Johnson was ranked as the nation’s 20th-best overall player in the ESPNU 150 and was 25th by Scout.com and 32nd overall in the Rivals.com. The Super Prep Dixie Defensive Player of the Year placed 18th on that recruiting service’s Elite 50 list and was regarded as their fourth-best linebacker in the country and the publication’s top-ranked player in the state of Alabama.
Johnson first began to garner serious attention from recruiters as a sophomore. He notched his career high in tackles in 2006 with 126 stops, including 81 solo tackles, 13.0 tackles for loss, three fumble recoveries and two interceptions. As a junior, he had 70 tackles, including 15.5 behind the line of scrimmage and three sacks.
In his final prep campaign, the linebacker registered 110 tackles (78 solos) with two sacks and was credited with eleven interceptions, despite missing three games with an injury. He also saw action on offense, scoring twice on ten receptions for 215 yards.
That performance earned Johnson Mobile Press-Register Super Southeast 120, Atlanta Journal-Constitution Super Southern 100 and Orlando Sentinel All-Southern team honors in 2008. The two-time Alabama Sports Writers Association’s first-team 4A All-State selection (2007-08) would conclude his high school career by playing in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.
Johnson chose the University of Alabama over scholarship offers from Louisiana State, Southern California, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Texas A&M and Tennessee. He played behind All-American Don’t’a Hightower at weak-side outside linebacker during his freshman season, appearing in twelve contests with two starts, posting 28 tackles with a sack and 4.5 stops-for-loss for the eventual national champions, the first of three rings that he would earn.
As a sophomore, Johnson opened fall camp listed third on the depth chart at middle line-backer, but would go on to start seven of thirteen games for the Tide. He delivered 33 tackles and intercepted one pass for Nick Saban’s unit. In 2011, Johnson was again on the move, as the now 245-pound junior split time with C.J. Mosley at weak-side linebacker, again starting seven times in thirteen contests. He posted 47 tackles, 6.5 for losses and added to his interception total in the Tide’s base 3-4 defensive alignment.
As has been the process his first three seasons, Johnson shifted positions again, returning to middle linebacker, sharing the position with Trey DePriest. The senior earned five starting assignments and appeared in all fourteen games. He finished his final season with a career-best 55 tackles, causing two fumbles, both coming on tackles behind the line of scrimmage to receive his third championship ring.
