TRACY “Ace” SANDERS

Wide Receiver/Return Specialist

University of South Carolina Gamecocks

#1

5:07.4-178

Bradenton, Florida

OVERVIEW

The Gamecocks have been known for featuring towering wide receivers since the “turn of the century,” sending the likes of 6:05 Troy Williamson (Minnesota in 2005), 6:03 Sidney Rice (Minnesota in 2007), 6:03 Jared Cook (Tennessee in 2009) and 6:03 Alshon Jeffery (Chicago in 2012) to the National Football League in the early rounds of the draft in recent seasons. Yet, while they all enjoyed tremendous success under the guidance of offensive-minded head coach Steve Spurrier, few could boast the dynamic pass catching and return ability of one Tracy “Ace” Sanders.

Much like his father, Tracy, a wide receiver from 1976-79 for Hall of Fame coach Bobby Bowden at Florida State University before concluding a professional career with the Tampa Bay Storm in the Arena Football League in 1984, ace is a diminutive, yet explosive player with sub-4.4 speed. He came into his own as the team’s featured pass catcher during his junior campaign in 2012, but had established himself as one of the best return specialists in the Southeastern Conference the previous campaign.

Even though Sanders started just 21 games with the offensive unit during his three seasons as a Gamecock, he is 14th on the school career-record chart with 99 receptions and made the most of those opportunities, as he turned thirteen of those grabs into touch-downs, tying for ninth in South Carolina annals. As a junior, his nine touchdown catches tied for sixth on the school annual record chart, along with going on to break the team season-record when he gained 429 yards as a punt returner.

The Bradenton, Florida native was regarded as the tenth-best receiver in the nation, according to Scout.com, after his senior season at Manatee High School. Scout.com and ESPN.com according the Hurricanes wide-out with a three-star prospect rating and Rivals.com placed him on their four-star list. He would play in his final game as a prepster when he accepted an invitation to join the state’s elite prospects at the 2010 Florida Athletic Coaches Association North-South Football Classic.

Sanders first began to receive national recruiting attention as a junior. Playing for a Hurricanes team that relied predominantly on the running game, he pulled down 29 passes for 578 yards (19.9 ypc) with seven touchdowns, earning second-team All-Area honors. As a senior, he received All-State consideration after helping the team reach the Florida State Class 5A Championship game, as he caught 65 passes for 990 yards and ten touchdowns playing for head coach Joe Kinnan.

The receiver enrolled at the South Carolina in 2010, choosing the university over offers from Florida, Florida State, South Florida, Rutgers and West Virginia, among others. He played in all fourteen games behind Tori Gurley as a slot receiver, earning Freshman All-Southeastern Conference honors from the league’s coaches. He ranked fourth on the team with 25 receptions for 316 yards (12.64 ypc) and two scores. He also showed off another weapon, when he fired a touchdown pass vs. his father’s former team, Florida State, in the

Chick-fil-A Bowl.

In 2011, Sanders was named the team’s Most Improved Wide Receiver coming out of preseason camp. He would start eight of thirteen games in the slot, finishing second on the team with 29 receptions for 383 yards (13.21 ypc) and five touchdowns. He placed fifth in the SEC with a 9.31-yard average on sixteen punt returns, along with fielding an onside kick for eight yards. He posted three solo tackles for the special team coverage units, where he caused a fumble in the ECU clash.

As a junior, Sanders was named co-Special Teams Player of the Year by the Southeastern Conference’s coaches. He started all thirteen games, leading the team with a career-high 45 receptions for 531 yards (11.80 ypc) and six touchdowns. He led the conference and was fourth nationally with a punt return average of 15.32 yards, returning two of those kicks for touchdowns while setting a school record with 429 yards on those eighteen runbacks.

The coaching staff was expecting Sanders to return to school for the 2013 season, feeling that an additional year would help him refine his developing receiving skills. But, after he delivered a standout performance vs. Michigan in the Outback Bowl that earned him MVP honors (caught nine passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner, and returned a punt 63 yards for another score), the junior decided to leave the team and enter the 2013 NFL Draft class.

“Ace had an exceptional game in the Outback Bowl,” said head coach Steve Spurrier, “and he felt like maybe it was his time, he was as hot as he was going to be. We’re all for Ace and we wish him the best.”

CAREER NOTES

Sanders started 21-of-40 games at South Carolina, finishing 14th in school history with 99 receptions for 1,230 yards (12.42 ypc), as his thirteen touchdown grabs tied Toby Cates (1991-94), Monty Means (1992-95) and Troy Williamson (2002-04) for ninth on the school all-time record chart…Gained 72 yards on 72 carries (6.00 ypc) and completed 2-of-5 pass attempts for 19 yards and a pair of touchdowns…Returned 53 punts for 594 yards (11.21 avg) and three scores, also gaining 24 yards on two kickoff returns and recording five solo tackles with a forced fumble as a member of the special team units.
