NAIA INTERVIEWS
I sat down with two players to watch this fall. Here is what they had to say.
RB TERRANCE COBB, CUMBERLANDS (KY)
What is your current height, weight and workout numbers?
Terrance: 5’10, 214 pounds. 4.45 40. My bench max is around 340. Squat is around 500 pounds. Clean is 300 pounds. 4.2 short shuttle.
Where did you go to high school?
Terrance: Fulton HS in Knoxville, TN.
Did you play any other sports in high school besides football?
Terrance: I wrestled, basketball, and track.
Why did you choose Cumberlands (KY)?
Terrance: I was at a Junior College in Mississippi and didn’t really like it. Coach Bland followed up with me and I called him up and asked if I could get there anytime soon. He said go to community college and get your grades together. I chose him because he stuck with me the two years after initially recruiting me.
What is your major and GPA?
Terrance: Criminal Justice. 2.4.
When do you expect to graduate?
Terrance: Spring 2014.
What is the biggest adversity you have had to overcome in your college career or life?
Terrance: Sitting out from 2008 to 2010. I had to do some soul searching if football is what I wanted to do anymore. I remember the first time I got here I came in the spring and had trouble catching on to the plays. I had an injury.
Talk about your family background such as parents, siblings, and employment.
Terrance: My parents are divorced. My dad is a retired truck driver and my mother works at Goodwill. She goes to school at a community college back home in Knoxville. My oldest brother is Reggie and William is my middle brother. He is in the army. I have two sisters Kathy and Pam. Pam is a teacher and Kathy is retired from the air force. I grew up in an inner city neighborhood. There wasn’t a lot of positive going on in my neighborhood. Most of the guys I grew up with are in jail or deceased now. I didn’t have both parents in the home so football is what made me who I was and where my guidance came from. My mother and some of the coaches who coached me gave me that guidance when I was younger.
Are you married or single?
Terrance: Single.
Do you have any kids?
Terrance: No kids.
Do you have any relatives who played in the NFL?
Terrance: My oldest brother Reggie Cobb played in the NFL and he currently scouts for the 49ers.
What do you feel are your strengths and weaknesses?
Terrance: I don’t like to go down easily and I want defenders to work hard to tackle me. That’s my biggest strength. My biggest weakness is pass protection. I think I have to get better at that.
Which positions have you played in college?
Terrance: Just running back and kickoff return.
What is the highlight of your career?
Terrance: Winning the conference championship my freshman year.
Who is the best player you have faced in your career?
Terrance: I played against Randall Cobb and Harrison Smith. One guy I practice against here is Weston Hazelhurst. He’s not a big linebacker but always in the right place. You hate practicing against him because he is really good.
Who is the best player on your team?
Terrance: Willie Gibson. He’s good. He’s real talented. He’s probably the fastest guy I have ever played with on my team. He can run it, catch it, I haven’t seen him throw it but I bet he could.
Is there anyone else on your team who has NFL potential?
Terrance: Definitely Willie Gibson and we have another back DeAngelo Jordan who is good. We got a corner who is solid Adrian Hightower.
What are your goals for this year?
Terrance: I want to win the conference and national championships. I am 1800 yards of being the NAIA all-time leading rusher. Main goal is to win a national championship.
What are your future goals?
Terrance: I want to start a coaching career or retiring from football in 10 years or so and hopefully be established as a coach in 20 years.
WR WILLIE GIBSON, CUMBERLANDS (KY)
What is your current height, weight and workout numbers?
Willie: I was 5’10 ½, 180. I ran a 4.37. I haven’t done anything but the power clean and it was 300.Â
Where did you go to high school?
Willie: Wilcox County High School in Rochell, Georgia.
Did you play any other sports in high school besides football?
Willie: I played basketball and ran track.
Why did you choose Cumberlands (KY)?
Willie: Really because I didn’t like the junior college I went to. I had a couple of friends up here and it was a good school so I came on up here.
What is your major and GPA?
Willie: Sports Management. 2.7.
When do you expect to graduate?
Willie: Spring 2014.
What is the biggest adversity you have had to overcome in your college career or life?
Willie: I would say the transformation of coming from a small school.
Talk about your family background such as parents, siblings, and employment.
Willie: I grew up with my mother. I had two other brothers. My oldest brother works in Atlanta at BB&T. I am the baby brother. My middle brother is back at home working. I didn’t have no father in my life growing up. She works at Modern Farmers where they make carpet. I grew up in a rough neighborhood. It was rough man. It was hard to stay out of trouble. There was a lot of stuff going on. You have to be strong and have a level head to make it happen.
Are you married or single?
Willie: Single.
Do you have any kids?
Willie: No sir.
Do you have any relatives who played in the NFL?
Willie: No sir.
What do you feel are your strengths and weaknesses?
Willie: Catching the ball and stretching the field are my biggest strengths. I am also a playmaker. My weaknesses are blocking and route running. I have been working on my route running and blocking all summer so I will be able to dominate every aspect of the game for this upcoming season. That is the main reason I stayed on campus for the whole summer to become a complete player.
Which positions have you played in college?
Willie: Wide receiver, running back, and kick returner.
What is the highlight of your career?
Willie: Playing college football here at Cumberlands.
Who is the best player you have faced in your career?
Willie: Alfonzo Dennard of Nebraska. I played high school ball with him and he is my best friend. Another good player was Casey Hayward who went to Vanderbilt. I played against him in high school.
Who is the best player on your team?
Willie: Terrance Cobb.
Is there anyone else on your team who has NFL potential?
Willie: Terrance Cobb.
What are your goals for this year?
Willie: Help the team win the conference and hopefully the national championship.
What are your future goals?
Willie: I hope to get a chance to play in the NFL for some time and then after that try to get my own business or be an agent or something.
